In the old Latin tradition of Ash Wednesday the priest would put ashes on the forehead of the people and say "Memento homo, quia pulvis es, et in pulverem reverteris." (Remember man that thou are dust and unto dust thou shall return.)

Pulver Wednesday, or pulvering day, is an obsolete form for Ash Wednesday. The origin is Latin pulvis, which means powder - pretty much like ash.
