It is not illegal to be a prostitute. It is illegal to solicit. However the police and social services try not to arrest prostitutes because all it means is longer hours on the streets to pay the fines they receive.
The only way to combat this problem is to take advice from our European neighbours and legalise prostitution. That way they would be looked after in brothels and safer.
Prostitituion has been around since man existed and will always be around. Trying to be all Victorian about it and pretend we can eradicate it will only drive it underground and make women more vulnerable.

In the UK prostitution is not formally illegal, some of the situations surrounding it are illegal. For example: it is supposed to be illegal to Curb call, or consistantly persue solicitation. Not to mention that it's obvious they are among the "not so smart" to decide to take such a chance, but if they arrested them, if they catch the killer where would they put him/her if the jails are full of hookers?

it all ****!!! They don't care about those girls. They are use as mouse in the lab. in the hope that the killer strike again. Why the gov does not legallise the trade. With a proper license and indoor. Girl will be safe register and check by nurse. Also the illegal sex trade will loose it strenght. The sex trade at the moment make billion because it not legal.

Prostitution IS illegal if you are on the streets it IS NOT illegal if you are working for youreslf from home. The police in this case have assured all prostitues/kerb crawlers that they will not be charged with any crime. this is because they need their help to compile a list of "punters" and inform them of sightings and such.

Some sound advice for us all as we all sometimes forget to take ourcommon sense with us when we go out. This is from Northants Police..
Women.... In light of the recent murders in ipswitch I think it is important to read the following info for your own safety.
Things women should know to stay safe: Please Take the time to read these pointers. There may just be one or two you hadn't thought of. After reading this, forward it to someone you care about. It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in.
1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!
2. If a robber asks for your handbag, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you.... he is probably more interested in your handbag than you and he will go for the handbag. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown into the boot of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm through the hole and start waving. The driver won't see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
4.Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their cheque book, or making a list).
DON'T DO THIS! A predator could be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, and attack you. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.
5. A few notes about getting into your car in a car park:
A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and check the back seat.
B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most attackers surprise their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the shop, or work, and get aguard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
6. ALWAYS take the lift instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot.
7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; and even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!
8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
9. Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird. The policetold her 'Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, "We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear babies' cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night.
Please pass this on and DO NOT open the door for a crying baby.
I'd like you to forward this to all the women you know. It may save a life.
A candle is not dimmed by lighting another candle. Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot of crazies in it and it's better safe than sorry.

I see your point, but gives these girls a break. I doubt very much that any of them actually WANT to be a prostitute. It's just the way their situation is and they probably can't see a way out of it. Add to that they're fairly vunerable at the moment, and I think it's fair to say that the police should be turning a blind eye at the moment.

People often spend ages on remand awaiting trial, sometimes this is tactical - i.e. in high profile cases maybe a better chance of a fair trial when media coverage has died down and the jurors may have forgotten about the case making them less biased.

No, the illegal part is of the person paying for it now.
They could either go out and "maybe" get murdered by a madman, or don't go out there and defenitly get murdered by their pimp.
Plus think how high the rape rate would be if there were no prostitutes. The old saying still stands"us women are sitting on a goldmine".

Why arrest 'the ladies of the night'?If there were no clients, there would be no prostitutes.I've said here before & i'll say it again:Prostitutes play a vital, part in keeping down sex attacks on other women.Men can act out their fantasies,how-ever weird, with women who will oblige for payment.I have as much respect for the value of a prostitutes life,as i have for anyone elses',so leave the poor girls alone & let them get on with their lives as best they can.

There aren't any working there at the moment. The night before last, one girl turned up for work and the police took her home. Last night there weren't any at all.
All of them are known to the police and have multiple convictions. However, when you are addicted to crack or heroin, you just go right back out there to sell your body all over again.
