Took it in to the shop to have it diagnosed and of course they recommend going with the most expensive top of the line replacement. If Im shopping for a motherboard and processor can I go with any brand and have it compatible with all my other parts?, I do realize I might have to get new ram depending on what I go with. The fried parts were an AMD 900 and had it for almost 7 years.

Yes you would need new RAM, you are most likely still using SDRAM, and they haven't made motherboards that take that in at least 4 years. Other than the RAM though, everything else should work, but don't be surprised if some other stuff starts breaking, if everything else is 7 years old it is reaching a fairly old age for computer parts. If you want further help, like on what MB and processor to buy for how much, just send me an email.

EDIT: After answering I read the first answer, and I take issue with that, AMD has plenty of good solutions for motherboards. In fact even for Intel and Intel board wouldn't be my first recommendation, there are plenty of companies that make good boards for both types.

My first wager may well be a foul ability grant (additionally broken with the help of the flexibility surge). yet many times it is the 1st ingredient the keep might examine. be sure with them that they did replace it. If not, they owe you the different paintings they could desire to do for not wisely changing it the 1st time. attempt here. Open the computing device and get rid of any taking part in cards (video, community, and so on) that are interior the field, and likewise get rid of the reminiscence. attempt turning on the computing device lower back and notice if it beeps ar you. If it would not, then the flexibility supplly is undesirable. If it does, positioned the reminiscence decrease back in and turn it on lower back. See if it tries as nicely. If it does, then one in all the different taking part in cards you bumped off is undesirable and shorting out the board. replace the taking part in cards one after the other and notice in case you may hit upon it is the undertaking. in case you may hit upon a foul card, then replace it. finally, it quite is recommended to evaluate making an investment in a UPS. they start up at approximately $50, and are on the subject of the size of a motor vehicle battery. They plug into your outlet, then the computing device, visual demonstrate unit, and so on plug into it. It has a huge battery that actual runs the computing device, after it is recharged from the opening. that's going to guard your computing device from any destiny ability spikes (brown-outs or perhaps total ability disasters). in case you have fried that many systems in that short a time, it appears that evidently such as you have some ability subject concerns. A $50 united statesis plenty greater decrease priced then a clean board and technique each six months (or much less).

we stick with the Intel range of CPU's and the Intel range of MB's..they just work together so well..the probs with the AMD CPU's is that they dont have a really reliable choice of MB's to install them on...we stopped building systems with AMD CPU's because of this
we also dont just try to get our customers to just buy the top end of the range..we build to the customers requirements/budget etc...you stay in business longer that way;)

EDIT:we just had a real bad run with diff MB's with the AMD CPU's mysticman...after a heap of burst caps on the boards you get wary
