My baby is 4½ months old, and is eating cereals and bottled baby foods. Her stool has recently become very strange and varying in color (and I mean tecnicolour, if you'll excuse the description!) Is it normal, and why is this?

Yellow, green (as grass!), dark green (almost like meconium), almost black...
She looks happy & healthy, though.

Yes this is normal. The green, when like grass color, is because your baby's food contains much Iron and whatever Iron is not needed is put towards the waste and this leaves the poo as a greenish color.
The darker stools are normal and will vary in degree of brown and black due to the new foods and the different vitamins and minerals mix in baby food.
During this time, pale colors, like gray, this would be an abnormal stool and should be brought to a pediatricians attention.
As long as the stools remain the colors you have described and are not hard or runny, then it is normal. If it gets hard then there is not enough fiber in baby diet, and if runny, it could be a cold or too much fiber in baby diet.

Yes. Baby might still be getting that 1st stool out. It can be yellow and seedy since breastfed. Usually though it last for the 1st month or so. After that you will notice a change in how often baby goes and maybe the texture or color of the stool.

Children's stools change colour and vary depending on what they eat. As long as there isn't blood in it and she isn't constipated then she should be fine. Speak to you health visitor and she will be able to put your mind at rest.
I'm sure your daughter will be fine tho.

I found my babies had different colours. Varing from light yellow to nearly black. I took it to be normal, according to the different vitimins etc in the babies food, that is new to her.
Also even different colours when I was breast feeding, which was all according to the different foods that I had eaten.
Enjoy your baby.

I'll say. As their eating habits change, so does their stool. Anyway, you'd better ask your pedi about it.

It could be the iron in the cereal.
