Shivering is the bodies way of keeping warm.. The shivering cause the blood to circulate throught the body more quicky and an increse of bloodflow through the body helps prevent severe frostbite.

Shivering is the bodies way of warming up. A shiver is a form of movement, which causes energy to be released which produces heat. Thats the real short, simple version. It does take energy, so it uses calories, but you will not lose much weight. Sorry

Shivering is one of the methods that the human body uses to warm itself. It is a neurological reaction, that the body executes when it gets too cold. Joggers are familiar with the concept of moving to stay warm; they run in the coldest of weather and manage to stay warm. Basic physics dictate that energy taken from a storage source (like our fat) and changed to another form of energy (your body movements), results in yet another form of energy - heat. So when your muscles start moving back and fourth rapidly, they make heat, which helps warm the body in the cold. Some people have a different tolerance for cold, and in fact those who shiver easier, can withstand colder temperatures. Specific tolerances can change as we adapt over long term exposure, which is why all those Florida natives look at you funny when you wear your shorts down there in January, they have just adapted to the warm temperatures.

Interesting question. The reason we shiver is because it is the way that the body moves around looking for warm air. It sounds weird until you think about it. Think of a body sitting in a chair. The person is cold and the temperature drops all of a sudden. The body reacts by moving around and around looking and seeking warmth. It is an involuntary reaction.

Shivering is a response to environmental or sensation stimuli such as cold weather, to warm up the body or excitement as in being touched by someone you like: or in a response to seeing something you don't like.

Shivering is the body's natural way to increase body heat. Weird, I know...

And yeah, it is rumored that you can loose weight whilst shivering. But who would want to do that? lol

We shiver when we see something gross too. I think its a mental reaction that sends a nerve throughout our body. Losing weight.... I would think so only on people that have a lot of blubber.

Because it is cold and the muscles go into spasm in order to create warmth
