I've heard about a phenomenon of being grounded. I'm pretty sure it's some kind of penalty for speaking out against President Bush and that it's a pretty American-centric type of punishment that's even pushing it's prevelance into Australian society. How can the so-called "land of the free" be the source of such oppressive, degrading, wacky punishments?

To be grounded is actually a lenient punishment. There are more painful ones like physical abuse etc.

Being grounded has nothing to do with the government. Don't know where you got your information but you are way off base with this one. A parent grounds a child when they have done something wrong. There are a lot worst punishments than being grounded. Although it is safe to assume President Bush was grounded sometime in his life and he also probably grounded his kids. So that would be the only way President Bush has anything to do with being grounded.

Parents ground their children. That's a form of punishment which is used in good parenting. The child stays home because they did something stupid before, like binge drink with their friends and got into a car accident.

I don't know what you believed it to be or who you thought would receive it.

Ground means punishment for a minor offense. It is legal when there are valid reasons, if none, it is oppressive.
