The goddess of the Yangtze river, as the baiji is called in ancient Chinese mythology, has vanished. It is written about and revered in the most ancient of books. It is the spirit of the river.

It means the loss of a mammalian evolutionary line believed to have begun 25 million years ago -- or about 20 million years before man.

madness.

You know I want to care!! I really do. But, before yesterdays article stating the fact that they are extinct, I didn't even know they existed!!
News about the environment is really starting to be of importance now. Before, it just didn't hit the main stream news. Do you think it will make a difference? Will people change their lifestyles to combat global warming?? Will people stop buying from companies that dump chemical waste in the rivers?
There was a news article yesterday that the EU will regulate all companies, pertaining to their chemicals used and how they dispose of waste. This is what should be done all around the world. If companies and manufactures can't 'clean' up their products, they shouldn't be allowed to manufacture anything!!

There are alot of animals that alot of people don't know about on the brink of extinction, and yes i do i care. Once these animals are gone it will have a long term effect on the ecosystem. It already is in alot of places. For example there is an endangered goat that was poached for a long time in the Kashmir/Pakisan area, a food relied upon by snow leopards. Over hunting caused a decline in the goats, and therefore a decline in the leopards. Because of all the unrest in that area at the moment, no one is poaching so there has been an increase in both goats and leopards. What affects one creature will affect another and will eventually come back to us. I'd like my children and grand children etc to be able to see the rich diversity of life i have and not just look at what we used to have and ask me what went wrong. When sitting in an arm chair watching MTV and eating donuts its very easy to think the Worlds problems are have not been laid at your door..........just take a moment to think...

Actually I do care. I am very annoyed. I was hoping to travel to China and have a flame grilled Baiji burger in the next few years. Now I won't be able to.

Damn!

OK, I confess, I'd never heard of them either.
