The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

There are a number of ways to begin. First, you can try the SBA. They have a number of publications available. Next you can try looking into business specific periodicals. I currently subscribe to Business 2.0, Fast Company, Entrepreneur, Inc., and others. You can also purchase books (inexpensive ones), such as Entrepreneur Magazine's, START YOUR OWN BUSINESS by Rieva Lesonsky. Mine is currently all marked up from my notes.

There are also a number of places you can look for business plan instructions, formats and templates. I have used the Net extensively by just typing in general search terms. I've used: "free business plan templates," free business plan writing software," and similar phrases and terms. Just be sure to include the word FREE when doing your search. This method limits the number of ads/spam/pop-ups, etc. appearing during your search. It also provides you with a smaller, yet better search list with which to locate your information.
