Every body joins the military for a different reason. Why do people get low paying jobs and stay there for many years without advancing? Oh, it is because they are poor and uneducated right? This question is stupid now as it was 9 years ago.

Well it's sort of a statement that if otherwise stated would have the PC police all over the individual whom uttered it....let's say a political figure said, "All African Americans are poor and uneducated"....he/she would be hung up to dry in the media. Recently a political figure who was perhaps considering running again for President made a bad joke. The repercussions?...well let's just say his opponents will have the sound byte to air over and over again...

It is not a new viewpoint and you here it now because the ones saying this have no clue. I am currently serving in Iraq in the national guard. I have an associates degree and a decent job when not deployed. That may not sound smart to some, but i do it to help the others that are doing it. Someone has to.

It is a very insulting statement, whether it is true or not.
Many poorer people see the military as a way out of some of their financially problems, but that is no reason to go about insulting the people that are out there fighting for our country (regardless of whether or not one supports the war itself)
A rich person, who is heading to a good college will probably see no need to in list in the army, simple as that. It does happen of course, but not as often as people who go to the army to fund their college education or secure a better salary than they would otherwise have.
I salute everyone who risks their lives for my country.

well it was insulting in 1979 and it is insulting in 2006. it is an insult to the people in the military who are defending our country. frankly it is an insult to me. my grandfather served in the air force and he is a member of mensa (if you don't know it's an assosiation for people who have an iq that is considered genius) also i have a friend who was in the air force who is a member of mensa so to say that members of the military are poor and uneducated is horrible. honesly, they are underpaid but that is the governments fault and the military servicemen should be given a raise.

You have that wrong. The DRAFT was for the poor and uneducated. If you were going to be drafted and you had the money to continue your education they couldn't be drafted. if u didn't have the money you got to go to other countrys and kill people. today, you can join the military and if you don't like it you can quit. Isn't that cool?

Anybody who volunteers to go and die in a needless war like that taking place now in Iraq, must certainly need to have his/her head examined. Contrast that with WW II when heroic people were drafted as well as volunteered to stop Nazism in Europe as well as Japanese aggression in Asia. It all depends on the cause for which one is called.

Because it is false.
Go to military base and pick ten people.
Got to shopping mall and pick ten people.
(same age range)
Give them IQ and aptitude tests.
Guarantee military people get best scores.

funny thing...when I was in U.S.C.G ....
"stupid effing civilians" was muttered often enough.
They were always doing stupid things to get themselves into trouble.
