Everyone has it's own fate.... and within that....bad things can happen and good also. you asked about bad things...well, I believe it is to see how strong we are.
and yes good things happen to someone else...not to me , cuz I'm a good person :)

Bad things happen to bad people too.
Well, I had not a specially easy life but for the moment it is quite all right and I can tell you that with an open mind, mostly when the edge of the pain or the sorrow is lessening, you can see this as life's lessons.
I say, when you are a bit out of the situation.
Of course someone loosing a child, for example, will not easily feel that way...
My only explanation until now is an open mind to the notion of karma and reincarnation... I was raised as a catholic and have never find any consolation there...
I am very sorry if my answer upset you, I just try to tell you honestly what I think...

1. Good people make wrong DECISIONS. They are not immune to the consequencies of those decisions. Example if a person on noticing that some company shares in the stock market are rising and decides to invest a bundle without seeking advise from an experienced broker and unfortunately the stocks start a downward spiral...
2. Good people make wrong CHOICES. If a person knowingly marries an alcoholic hoping that by smothering that person with love that the addiction(disease) will go away.....
3. For the manifestation of God's Awesome Might.
People get into problems so that GOD's miraculous Power can be seen at play in their salvation...People who have been married for a long time without having children suddenly discover that they are expectant....

Not only to bad things happen to good people, good things happen to bad people, the reverse is the same too. Withought having to go into higher mathematics, it's all a matter of probability versus modifying factors, the baseline: the universe does not give a flying monkey turd whether your good or not, it's a giant mechanism of physical forces, ever debated ethics with a quartz wristwatch? It gets real old, real fast.

In the beginning God gave man the dominion of the earth, so when things happen it is from man's doing for the most part.
Therefore when man does evil it happens according to our will, also we have free will and could be in the wrong place at the wrong time, whereas bad things could happen even by chance.

as u know all thing created by God. and nature of the world is to be rewarded for all people who have done well vise versa for others.
To be a good people u must merit ur self and u cannot do it until some trial done.
Some as school there is exams for looking who were read.
