John Wesley was the founder of the world Methodist movement. His father was a Church of England clergyman, holding the living of Epworth in Lincolnshire, England. Whilst he was a child the rectory caught fire and John was snatched from the flames in the nick of time. In later life he would refer to himself as 'a brand plucked from the burning' He went to Oxford University and became a don and a priest of the Church of England. He traveled to Savannah, Georgia as a priest. Whilst he and his brother, Charles, had been at Oxford they had formed the 'Holy Club' which was 'methodical' in its ways, which is why the denomination later became known as Methodists. On Whitsunday 1738 John and Charles attended a Moravian meeting house in London where both 'felt their hearts strangely warmed' and a few weeks later John preached a famous sermon on the doctrine of present personal salvation by faith, i.e without the need for an intermediary (priest) between God and man. he later started his famous tours of the British Isles, traveling on horseback, preaching in the open air. In all he traveled over 18,000 miles. This is but a short precis, for more look at the wikipedia entry I quote. (I'm not sure what is meant by your a.k.a.-encarta.msn.com)
