As you have not mentioned that you are using a sound card that is onboard or you are using an addon sound card on your PCI solt. i would suggest you the following evaluation before going for any other solution.
1) Open your cabinet and check if you are using a sound card that is shipped on and with the motherboard, or you are using an extra card that is on your PCI solt.
2) If you are using a sound card that is shipped on the motherboard then ,you need to know the motherboard model to download the sound card driver. If you are using intel motherboard download the drivers form http://intel.com .. If you are using some other companys board try http://www.driverguide.com/.
if you are using an addon card then check the model and company name that is on the card and download its driver
from its company site or from ttp://www.driverguide.com/.

When you re-formated your PC all the software drivers needed to run the hardware on your sound card were lost. My best advice is to take the sound card out of your PC and see if you can see which make and model it is. When you know this, you can go onto the internet and search for the software drivers. Make sure that you select the right ones for your operating system, e.g. Windows XP/2000. When you have downloaded them run the setup prog and that should be that. If it doesn't work, or you cant find the drivers, I would say the best thing to do is buy a new sound card, they are usually very cheap unless you want a full blown sound card for music production.

Did you reformat due to sound problems? If so, the card could have gone bad.
After you did the reinstall of the original OS, I am assuming from the CD that came with the system, device manager should have found the card on reboot and set it up for you. If that did not happen:
I would say let the device manager search for it and install the drivers. If it does not find the card, crack open the PC, remove the card, power on the PC so it removed that hardware from its 'settings', then power down, plug it back in and restart. It should find it.
If not, try a different slot for it (the spot on the mb it goes into). If nothing then, you have a bad card, replace it.

When you reformat your hard drive, all of your file including your soundcard driver were deleted... Therefore you need to re-install also the driver of your soundcard.
If you don't have the copy of your soundcard driver, you can download it on the internet. Look for your device Manufacturer and model, you can see it on your soundcard.
Goodluck!

Lost the driver (roughly, that's a little program that tells your machine how to handle the card). Either reinstall it from disk (if you have it) or go on line, try either Belarc Adviser or SIW to get a breakdown of your PC including the details of your card, and then go to the manufacturer's website to download a new one.

you've either upgraded your system to XP or you forgot to install a utillity that held the driver for your sound card....
not necessarily the corruption of the card my friend. You should be able to download a suitable driver for the operatin system you are now using from driverguide.com
