I have to say that I make far more than minimum wage and I do not think it is worth it. I have really been trying to develop my own business. I feel that employers today want alot and give alittle. There is very little of that quality that employers used to have when they appreciated thier employees and remembered that they are the reason that they got where they are. especially with the corporatization of this country. Corporations care very little for their employees and much more about the profit margin. The practice of laying off long term employees for cheaper younger employes has been in practice for some time now. Robbing some long term employees of their pensions. and basically stealing any sense of security from manyt americans. Add to that the fact that they have begun to ship many jobs overseas where labor is even cheaper, and then add to that the growing number of illegal immigrants in this country willing to work for even less and the future of the American worker starts to look pretty bleak. I think it is a shame that in this country we work so hard , have very little if anything to show for it and to top it all off, in some company's plan to keep costs down we could loose even what little we have if we are not re-employed within a two or three paycheck period not to mention that even when we do have steady work we still have so little free time to relax and unwind. Its no wonder we are all fat and stressed out. More and more I feel like an ever-ready battery that is used up and discarded by the type of employers that care only about the bottom line. European countries have a far different work ethic then we do here, I know in some places that once a company has invested in you and trained you they want to retain you and will do almost anything to help you stay productive. Marital problems, they send you to counceling. Drug or alcahol problem, they send you to rehab. Financial problems, they send you to a financial planner, I think that they understand that a happy employee who feels valued by the company that they work for is more productive because he is less stressed out and has fewer worries . All that and they get alot more vacation time too, in some European countries up to 6 weeks a year. Right from the first year! now that is incentive. I guess other countries work just as hard as us but they know when to quit.
And anyway. Havent they already proved that you cannot survive on minimum wage, even with another minimum wage worker in your household, even with overtime. We are getting ripped off. Good luck though. I say go into business for yourself.
