Not trying to take anything away from the older teams but some people actually think that they would beat the modern era teams. They would get murdered. the 72 Phins would be winless in today's NFL. No problem with calling them the "greatest" ever, concerning their accomplishments but please don't confuse the "greatest" with the "best".

Think about it this way. In the 70s, the overage OL was about 235 pounds, now a days thats even light for a LB. Naturally, the players today would be far superior because of the huge population pool the choose from, producing genetic freaks like LT. Training has something to do with it, but genes are the huge part.

You're absolutely right, for the same reason olympic records still get broken in every olympics. Training methods evolve, nutrition evolves, advances in medicine make for quicker healing from injuries. All these things add up to better athletes. Consider this, Lawrence Taylor is considered the "greatest" OLB of all time, he weighed 230 lbs. That would be tiny by todays standards, Merriman outweighs him by 40 lbs! And he lost 15 lbs. since last year, it's just crazy. Makes you wonder how far it will go.

Size has a lot to do with it, but the rules were much different back then. Everything is set up for the offense today. You can't EVER hit a QB anymore. Can't hit him below the knees or above the chest. Maybe they should just stick two flags in the QB's pocket and have the defensive players pull the flags out to down the QB. That's the next step.
If the QB's in the 60's and 70's had these rules I wonder what kind of numbers guys like Fran Tarkenton and Roman Gabriel would've compiled.

Every youth league I've every worked in has weight limits. Kids that big have to wait until they are in high school to start playing, but so do all of the other kids that size so they are all on the same footing. I would be a bit worried though about a kid that large who is really not that tall. You're talking about a BMI over 45 which is Morbidly Obese. If he really wants to play ball, get him running and doing exercises so he's ready when he hits high school.

True, the teams are better today, but those old timers were tough!!! Leather Helmets!!! Black players playing football in the 50's! Can you imagine what must have happened to them. I have to say, however, I really think that had Jim Thorpe been able to play today, he would still be one of the best players on the field. That guy could possibly be the most gifted athlete in American history!!!

The size, speed, and stamina of todays pro-football player vs. 1972 I would have to give the nod to a team today.
Good Luck!!!

I think the modern teams are way more talented, but the older teams played much harder, and cared about the game much more. I do think if a modern team played an old team they would still win, but it would be closer than you think.

i agree that todays teams are better, but to say the 72 phins would go winless, give them a little more credit, they would at least beat the niners today or the lions.
