My martial arts training always emphasized that we should never oppose an attacking force, but rather instead, redirect its path of attack to a neutralized disposition. But is there a way for America to redirect the Iraq war instead of fighting and dying opposing it?

Too bad Bush didn't take a lesson from your martial arts trainer... Osama sure did though. Attack the US, and wait for the neocons in power to put their 'brilliant' Plan for a New American Century into action by attacking Iraq. They've created the very thing they were so sure they would prevent, a more unstable Middle East, with thousands around the world drawn to Islamic fundamentalism with every US bomb dropped on innocent Iraqi lives... How to end the war? Get out, quit meddling in the affairs of the so-called sovereign Iraqi government (better called a proctorate) and send real aid, not the kind designed to manufacture a bunch of profits for Halliburton, Bechtel, and the rest of the petro-arms industry.

As long as Iran and Syria are funding Shiite Militias and insurgents, and Al-Qaida (Sunnis) are trying to destroy anything that looks like a democracy. Which they hate. The fight will go on. Frankly I believe that there is only two choices left.
1. Pull out and watch the Middle East blow apart. Saudi has already stated they will back the Sunnis with the exception of those in Al-Qaida to off set the influence of the Iranian backed Shiites. That will eventually end with Saudi and Iran fighting it out in Iraq, with Al-Qaida doing their thing in the midst of it all.
2. Go in right now and destroy Iran's nuke plants before they can get a weapon built (which if we don't I think Israel will, and much harsher) Also we would have to destroy Iran's economic ability to fund the Militants. That means oil costs skyrocket. But if Iran and Saudi get into it the Saudis have already stated they will drop the oil prices to the bottom to ruin Iran's economy, as it is almost strictly based off oil revenues. Which means Iran will retaliate by stopping all oil shipments out of the gulf. So the price of oil is going to shy rocket even higher

Actually, he's doing a brilliant job:

notice that Iraq is heading to full out civil war: Shiate vs Sunni... the muslims hated the US, but now Bush has them turning on each other....

expect to see more active roles by local governments (Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey) who end up getting dragged into it...

Redirecting muslims extremists toward each other? Brilliant!

-Notice the same thing is happening in Palestine with Hamas and Fatah factions too:

Brilliant! let the muslims kill each other!

If I was President Bush, I wouldn't want to end up the war, 'because he doesn't want to.
Have you seen any intention of him to stop the war? Watch the news and you wil see that he has new strategies. He has no intention to stop. He wants to keep this war going and rising gas prices, cutting programs, etc.
I think the question would look better if it was like this: If you were the President of the United States, how would you end the war?.
Then we could try to be in the President's shoes and find a solution.
But we already know that President Bush DOES NOT want to end the war.

This is a quote from one of my favorite websites. It explains how not to go to war, then explains HOW to go to war. Makes a lot of sense.

What Real War Looks Like

"U.S. troops were sent, not to crush an enemy threatening America, but (as Bush explained) to "sacrifice for the liberty of strangers," putting the lives of Iraqis above their own. They were prevented from using all necessary force to win or even to protect themselves. No wonder the insurgency has flourished, emboldened by Washington's self-crippling policies. (Perversely, some want even more Americans tossed into this quagmire.)

Bush did all this to bring Iraqis the vote. Any objective assessment of the Middle East would have told one who would win elections, given the widespread popular support for Islamic totalitarianism. Iraqis swept to power a pro-Islamist leadership intimately tied to Iran. The most influential figure in Iraqi politics is now Moktadr al-Sadr, an Islamist warlord lusting after theocratic rule and American blood. When asked whether he would accept just such an outcome from the elections, Bush said that of course he would, because "democracy is democracy."

No war that ushers Islamists into political office has U.S. self-defense as its goal.

This war has been worse than doing nothing, because it has galvanized our enemy to believe its success more likely than ever--even as it has drained Americans' will to fight. Washington's feeble campaign demonstrates the ruinous effects of refusing to assert our self-interest and defend our freedom. It is past time to consider our only moral and practical option: end the senseless sacrifice of our soldiers--and let them go to war."

I think this article says it best...

Withdraw all US troops from Iraq. Dismantle and Withdraw all forces and military bases present in other countries. Break down NATO and other military alliances with other countries. Concentrate more on defending the home soil than poking the nose in other sovereign country's internal affairs.

That's a no-brainer. Put both of George's daughters in uniform stick a rifle in their pudgy little hands and ship them off to Iraq. The war would end that afternoon.

Easy. The root cause is not Iraq, it it Iran, North Korea, Syria and Palestine. Invade these four countries and we will have world peace. The US and UK will invade Iran and North Korea and Israel will invade Syria (as Palestine is already invaded).

I would work with the worlds brightest minds to develop a solid strategy with specific timetables and maximize use of 'positive' media and how the U.S. is trying to do good.

I would do my best to minimize negative perceptions of the U.S. and get out of there as quickly as possible.
