There's a reason he's been elected time and again, and even withstood a failed coup supported by the US government: the vast majority of Venezuelans support him. By nationalizing the petroleum industry and implementing redistributory social welfare policies, Chavez has stopped the flow of petrodollars out of his country and into the coffers of Western oil corporations, instead providing 'common' people with education, health care, better services, and in general a huge improvement in their livelihoods. Also, it's no wonder that the US government opposes him so much, he's closed off a profitable area from Big Oil! The idea of less rights is certainly questionable, and can be linked back to anti-Chavez rhetoric from the US government and the generally pro-oil media in the US (see "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" a great indie flick about the failed coup attempt and the media's participation in promulgating all sorts of lies about the Chavez government).
