Parental rights cannot be taken away if the only reason is late child support. In most states, there has to be someone willing to adopt the child, such as a new spouse, for parental rights to be terminated.

Each state has different statutes relating to the severing of a parental relationship and the grounds for it.
In most states, however, a period of time coupled with no contact or interest in the child will be construed by a court as abandonment. This is most commonly used when a step-parent is wanting to adopt, but the absent parent cannot be found to either give consent or be notified.
For more precise information, contact an attorney with experience in family law in your state. For a referral, contact your local or state bar association.

every state is different, but i dont think they can take anyones parental rights away just because they owe child support. even the DEADBEATS in jail have rights.
but there is only one way to be sure; contact your local legal aid office. they are in every state and most counties. its in the phone book or call the county clerks office for it.
here are some links that may help; just click on your state and find the child support/custody sections.

It does not matter how much you owe, a parents rights cannot be taken away because they have failed to financially support the child.
