Users might search for the same information under slightly different URLs, e.g. gooogle.com and googel.com. An organization can register these domains and re-direct them to the correct location: google.com..

URL forwarding: the server takes your URL, and sends you to some other URL.

Example: if you enter http://microsoft.com, you are forwarded to http://www.microsoft.com, even though the two are different URLs.

It's basically a "placeholder" or a "shortcut" for parts of your website, depending on how you want to configure it.

It also helps when you changed website organization, and want to make sure any one going to the old links will be redirected to the new one.
