Underdevelopment is a historical phenomenon, and one that to understand you have to look at the history of colonization. During British rule, the most fertile land in the country was slowly consolidated into the hands of colonial rulers and their patsies. Agricultural production became based on extraction of resources for the colonial economy, retarding the development of indigenous industry around which the economy and society could develop. A similar pattern occurred after colonization, during the Cold War. To prevent Egypt from falling into the sphere of Russia, the US instituted a massive foreign aid campaign (Before the Iraq war, Egypt and Israel still received the most money the US spent on foreign aid). But the aid came with strings: it had to be used to purchase materials for Western-style agriculture based on petrochemical inputs (tractors, chemical fertilizers and pesticides...), with the goal being to develop an export-based agricultural industry. In other words, land was farmed for export to Western markets. Again, the resources of the country were being used to support the livelihoods of people in Europe and the United States. In sum, under the heavy hand of colonialism and neo-colonialism, the material basis for development has been denied to Egyptians over the past 150 years. When looked at historically, Islamic fanaticism is the result of underdevelopment, rather than the cause.

It is because of a dictatorial regime propped by the west (Bush & Blair) presided over by His Excellency Hosni Mubarak that has perpetuated retrogressive policies to the chagrin of the voiceless masses. Egypt is a fundamental player in the middle eastern peace
process and that is why the 'enforcer of world democracy' turn a blind eye when Egyptian are oppressed as long as the president is willing to do their bidding in this volatile region.

It is because of Islam which stifles progress because it does not allow for different views other than what is ordained. Let's face it if you remove the oil resource and revenue from the middle east most of those people would still be living in tents.

Egypt had already reached its peak during the time when they built the pyramids. Then it degraded and subsided until it became so backward until this day. Religion and corruption made Egypt an underdeveloped country.
