I am sick of hearing all the people who are saying horrible things about the pitbull breed because of this! It was a puppy. Puppies chew. The puppy did not attack the baby!!! Ugh... So what are yalls opinions??

I agree with the one vet that said that it would have taken some time for the puppy to chew off the baby's toes. It's not like it would have just walked up to the baby and chomped her toes off really fast. It was only 6 weeks old. A pit bull pup's teeth are very sharp. I wouldn't advise a pit bull pup for young children because of this. They are very active and quite rough. I had a pit bull pup when my daughters were 2 and 3 and when the put was about 12 weeks it jumped up and bit the youngest on her cheek. You can still kinda of see the scar 7 years later. But, the pup wasn't being mean. It was just being a puppy. They are very active and their little teeth are extremely sharp and often get caught on things easily. What I wonder is how long that little baby screamed and screamed while her parents were sleeping right next to her? My guess is that they were either on drugs and knocked out or they were asleep in a totally different room with their baby low enough that the pup could get to it. Why would you allow a little pup easy access to an infant? It doesn't matter what breed!

i live five minutes from where this happened and frankly i am tired of hearing it too!! the parents are in jail for child abandonment. they seem like pwt (poor white trash) they say they were sleeping on a mattress in the living room next to the baby. and that poor little puppy is so tiny and cute and he looks so scared in the place where he is being kept. i think something more than what they said happend went on. there is no way that any 6 week old puppy could just snap off a babies toes like that. 6 week old puppies barely have any teeth!! it had to have been chewing on those toes for a very long time. plus, like a local vet said, it was probably trying to nurse. ANYWAY i am fed up with it too and i really hope that the puppy doesn't get put down. i hope they will let someone out of state adopt it so it can live a happy and news free life.

Thats terrible. I doesn't sound like the dog is to blame. The parents were sleeping on a mattress on the floor and the baby in a car seat. Maybe this will turn out to be a happy ending for both the baby and the puppy. The parents shouldn't be parents or pet owners in the future in my opinion.

The only place a puppy of 6 weeks old should be is with its mother. That's far too young to rehome a puppy. At that age it's just learning to explore. It's never learned what it can or cannot chew on.
It's completely irresponsible of the parents to allow their baby to sleep on the floor, in the same room as a puppy. I feel bad for this poor baby & dog, who have come into this situation as a result of the parents stupidity.

Sounds to me like the dog is being blamed for something he didn't do. There is no way, if those parents were sober when they went to bed, that they could sleep through the screaming that child would have done! The seat was next to them for cry eye!
Nope, don't buy it, no way...and puppies WILL attack wiggling things like kittens do, but I say it is neglect since they knew they had a Pit, they know the breed has the potential for destruction on jaw strength alone (not predisposition or any other reason) so why was that child where the dog could get near it while the parents were sleeping?????
See, sometimes stupidity IS a crime! (neglect)

I agree. The people who are busy foaming at the brains and yammering about how pit bulls have awesome jaw strength and are just born to kill (even from 6 weeks of age!) seem to have selective reading skills.
I didn't see any of these geniuses out protesting Pomeranians when a Pomeranian killed a baby a couple of years ago. Why aren't these intrepid souls out telling people about how poms have locking jaws and their brains grow too big for their heads. And yet, a pom is at least twice the size of this puppy... it could kill bigger children!
Oh, that's right, it only makes the news if it's an OMG EVIL PIBBLE! No other dogs ever hurt people, ever. *rolls eyes*

This is definitely rare, (usually it is ferrets and other rodents that will chew on young children) but definitely possible. I agree that the parents are at fault for not minding their child and for not training their dog.
And while I agree that all dogs need training, certain breeds are predisposed to aggression - ie. pitts and rotties. For those of you who say, "Blame the owner, not the dog" - you also need to understand that differences in breed disposition exist and you cannot expect someone to train a Grey hound and a Pit Bull the same way and the dogs will act the same way. The Pit Bull always needs to be monitored more heavily.

That is totally absurd !!!!
The article states that the baby was sleeping beside the parents ...
... how in the hell would ANY animal be able to chew off the toes of a baby without the parents hearing howls of pain from the baby ????
What the frigging hell kind of drugs were those so-called parents on, anyway ???

It's not the puppies fault it is the parents fault. Pit bull puppies are tough, everyone knows that, you cannot tell me that their baby didn't cry and they didn't hear the cry. I can hear the sounds of doors closing on the parents in jail, hopefully they won't get a chance to get their baby back.
