Get a Thesaurus (from the library or borrow from a friend if no $).
Think about your favorite traits that make that friend so dear to you. Then, using the Thesaurus, use words that fit their name & make an acrostic card that can be framed.for example:
Grand lady
Interesting to talk to
Never tired of listening & caring
Number one at Scrabble
You bless my life...for my friend Ginny.
Not as well thought out as I would do for real, but you get the idea.
I did do this for my friend a few years back, cut out small graphics from an old calendar, glue-sticked 'em on, & put it into a one dollar frame from the $1.00 Store.
She has it sitting in a place of honor in her living room to this day.
I told her to put it up to remind her how dear she is to her friends every time she looks at it.
One year I got my clippers and went into the woods to cut pine boughs. Then I used little bows, ornaments, ribbons from the $1.oo Store & had custom made wreaths for all my friends to put on the door or inside, they really enjoyed them.
The other ideas of ways to offer time are all so right on the mark. Giving of your time to someone is the most precious gift.
Kudos to you for putting some thought into this, bet you'll continue to get some really great answers!Merry Christmas!

If I could afford it, I'd invite them all over for Christmas dinner and go all out with it. Huge turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, baked rolls, dessert, etc etc etc. Now that I'm older, I like when people do things for me rather than spend money on a present. If I couldn't afford it... IOU's. If it were a loved one I'd write them a poem, give it to 'em, and then laugh together about how broke I am. Then probably end up buying them a present with my next paycheck. Seriously though, if you're friends are truly friends, then they'll understand that you're a little strapped for cash and can't afford presents right now. You're making an effort to get them some kind of gift, that's gotta count for something. If all else fails, search for bargain books on Amazon.

If you have lots of time because you are not working you could offer to do things for them. I heard this idea once. Take a jar and put some slips of paper in it that say thinks like: 2 hours of babysitting. wash the car. 1 hour of house cleaning. wash the windows. You get the idea. Give them your services and they can use them whenever they want. Frankly if you can bake I think the easiest thing that doesn't cost much is to bake some nice cookies. The kind you have to cut out and frost. Most people don't have time these days and they love these things.

It sounds cheesy but you can make them some homemade cards letting them know how much they mean to you or even make some cookies. Being with loved ones and letting them know how much we care should be the real reason for the season in the first place and so often it gets lost from worrying about trying to get them the biggest and best presents. Good luck and I hope you and your friends have a great holiday!

Give them nice Christmas cards with a loving message. Write how special they are to you and the most precious present -believe me- is love. Show them. You do not have to buy a thing.

Feed them.

Food is great for the soul, and you can make a great meal for a dozen people incredibly cheaply.

Or, host a party where people bring their own alcohol and food, but as you are the host, you'll be giving them memories as their christmas presents.

E mail them Christmas notes and offer different presents-
your grandma-- a trip to the doctors.
your mom--- lunch and a movie (at a later date when you have money of course)
or clean out the attic, or shovel their sidewalks, walk their dogs, there are a lot of things people can do that do not cost money---but mostly with your parents- plan a weekend of ALONE time with them---there is nothing more wonderful than that.

Macaroni art. Or you could buy cards and a bag of candy for less than $5.
