Food consumption. According to the 2nd law of thermodynamics everything in the world proceeds to greater disorder. When we eat we break down food which is then used to construct cells, proteins, etc releasing heat in the process.

When the outside temperature drops, the body tries to raise its own temperature as follows:

1. Vasoconstriction - the arterioles (tiny blood vessels) in the skin constrict (become smaller in diameter). This restricts the blood flow to the skin. Thus less less heat is lost

2. Goosebumps - the hairs on the body stand up. This traps a layer of air on the skin. This layer of air acts as an insulator.

3. Shivering - this involuntary action produces heat energy in the body and warms you up.

When the outside temperature rises, the body tries to lower its own temperature as follows:

1. Vasodilation - this is the widening of the skin arterioles. More blood flows under the skin and more heat is lost as a result.

2. Sweating - sweat glands secrete more sweat. When the sweat evaporates, it absorbs latent heat from your body and cools you down.

The special temperature regulating system in the brain controls and regulates the production of heat in our body. Body temperature is adjusted to 37 degrees and the increase in muscle activity increases the production of heat in the body.

We sweat or shiver depending on what our body needs to do. The shivering gets the blood circulating faster and warms us up. The sweating cools us off by wetting our skin.

simple! animals hav been broadly grouped for this purpose ---
endotherms and ectotherms
endotherms r those which maintain their body temp, irrelevent to
what the atmospheric temp is.
this they do by a simple mechanism -- hormones and enzymes
these ensure our body temp does not go below 37degree celsius.
