US policy didn't lead to imperialism. It sounds like you've got one of those liberal, tree hugging, dirt kissing, hippie teachers who thinks that the US is the root cause of all the worlds problems. If the US wanted to be imperialistic we could. I've always thought that the US should solve their imigration problems by taking over Mexico, and spliting up into states. That way we could set-up shop south of the border, and get all the mexicans (who are going to come over here anyway) to start paying taxes (since the illegals use our tax system anyway). While we're at it, we should take Canada too. What are they going to do? Fight back with their world class military. If Canada, and Mexico didn't have the US to mooch off they wouldn't have a pot to piss in. I say we take over the entire North American Continent , and if someone doesn't like it, tough sh*t! Now that's imperialism for you.

The question requires a bit of thought. It depends on *when* and the definition your class is using for imperialism. For example, in today's globalized world, the U.S. can be accused of allowing economic imperialism from its multinationals. If you establish the definition of imperialsm you should then be able to argue which policies lead to this.

Look back in history to the early 20th late and late 19th century and our policies towards and our occupation of the Philippines, Panama and other central american, south american, and asian nations. You'll find examples that fit the traditional definition of imperialism. we took control of areas for both access to their natural resources and their strategic locations.

By attempts to secure physical and governmental resources. Intervention became a policy again after the forced intervention during WWII. It was at this point that the federal gov. gained massive amounts of control over state gov.
