im assuming that your car is automatic and without hearing it run i would believe that it could be a few reasons for this,1 your engine idle speed is too low ,im not sure if your car is fuel injected or carburettor ,if it is carby look were your throttle cable links on there should be a screw that you can turn clockwise which should increase the idle rpm,try that with transmission in park.if you have a tacho it should read about 800-900rpm.2 your engie timing may be out,you may need a timing light and specifications guessing about 4-6 degrees before top dead center,if you dont have these try loosening the distributor lock bolt , start engine and turn distributor slighty in either direction and listen for engine idle increase.this should be checked properly by a mechanic because your engine temp could increase if not correct.3 fuel filter if it is restricted the engine could starve for fuel.if your car is fuel injected and computer monitered you should if you can afford to take it to a mechanic and put on diagnosis machine.but why pay someone if you dont have to.i hope that i have assisted you .see our what you call the pontiac gto kickn but in the drifters we call it a HOLDEN MONARO over here.cheers rissole australia

It could be a dirty fuel filter. It's not getting enough gas and that's why it stalls.
