Sorry not to answer the question, but I believe running on one issue can only hurt our Republic and leads to radicalization, and what James Madison ( the most brilliant of our founding fathers) called factions. The momentary radical impulse that would cause or result from such a situation as has happened in the past, is precisely what our constitution was designed to prevent. You should read the Federalist papers, but im sure you have, seeing that you have a Ph.D in Poly Sci. The most important issue facing our country is probably our foriegn policy right now, or our massive debt, but that cant be solved until our situation in Iraq and Afghanistan is over.

One way or another, I'd be trying to get a narrower interpretation of the 14th Amendment. I'd either be trying to "pack the Court" with judges who'd interpret the 14th narrower than it has been on many, many occasions in the last 100 years. Or else I'd be trying to push for a new Amendment which would repeal and replace the 14th.

Reconciliation and unification of the country, we have been 50 50 for way to long. Screw the rest of the world, we need to focus on getting ourselves together again because right now we have partisan issues that have no reason to be partisan. (of course that all depends on if the rest of the world can take care of itself with out either screaming for our help or attacking us for a while, doubt that will happen)

Instituting a truly progressive tax structure like the country had in the '50s.

Back then top earners paid as much as 90% in taxes, and the country was going through a period of unparalled growth and improvement in every type of public service imaginable.

Education. Our educational system is a joke, and far too many graduates are all but illiterate. The purpose of education should not be to babysit our kids but to teach them to think and foster a love of learning. You can't do that by teaching them how to pass standardized tests or by dumbing things down - you do that by challenging them and by pushing them to use the brains they've been given.
