Tonight, we are seeing the Geminids. The Geminids are a meteor shower that occurs around the 13th of December (give or take a few days) and is caused by the Earth passing through debris left by what is believed to be an extinct comet called 3200 Phaethon. They're called such because they appear to eminate from the constellation Gemini. They seem to be intensifying every year, however (with 2-3 meteors being sighted a minute at best), and were only first observed around 1850.

When the sky is cloudy or the surroundings filled with fog it is unlikely we see the comets and shooting stars. Here in kerala, in the southern part of india, we see them every day. But it is rare we take notice of how many we saw. It is a natural phenomenon and not linked with any other thing. I mention it specially because some people associate it with a bad omen to see a shooting star. I am 58 now and in my teen age school days we had to study one lesson on "Comets and Shooting stars" which gave us a pretty and interesting insight. (But sorry I have forgotten the name of the author). Shooting stars are said to be the tiny parts broken away from comets, planets etc which wander in the space. When they come in the earth's field of attraction they are pulled towards the earth. And when they enter into the earths atmosphere because of the heat generated from the high friction they catch fire and thus we happen to see them. Seeing colourful shooting stars is not rare. It can be attributed to the contents of the burning substance. This can very easily be explained by the methods we employ to analise a salt in the chemistry lab. when a small part of the salt or compound taken on a glass rod is brought over the bunsen burner flame each of them give different colour. This can at times can also be attributed to Nobel Winning Physics Phenomena of Sir C.V.Raman, the RAMAN EFFECT..And in your case if you saw the shooting stars in a consecutive stretch with different coulours think of some fireworks at a distant place where from the sound of it was inaudible to you

Depending on where you live, there is a meteor shower occurring tonight. On the east coast, here in new york, it is happening around 2 or 3 o'clock. The last one that I saw was 2 years ago, it is a truly amazing sight to see, just makes you a little dizzy if you are outside on the ground looking up. The world spins pretty fast huh haha. Have Fun.

Hello there!
What you are seeing is: The annual Geminid meteor shower, expected to produce a reliable shooting star show that will get going Sunday and peak the middle of next week.
The Geminid event is known for producing one or two meteors every minute during the peak for viewers with dark skies willing to brave chilly nights.
Enjoy! :)

Ohhhh, you are so lucky and I am so jealous. I posted a question on answers earlier this evening asking if anybody had seen any meteors. I knew about the Geminid meteor shower but sadly I haven't seen a one all night. My husband tells me they are supposed to peak at around (2:00:am central time). that's about 1/2 hour from now my time. Come on over and answer my question at http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aq0olCYOij6EUYzGXFUdwBzsy6IX?qid=20061213201707AAGYyT4
