Pink Floyd as a band were very into conceptual albums and on the dark side of the moon they basically had the idea to create a certain mindset with the music. The whole album was gloomy because that was the emotion they meant to convey.

Don't see where you get gloomy, it is one of, if not the best album ever written. I guess it depends on your state of mind, and how "listen to it.

don't know, but i have heard that if you play it correctly while watching the movie 'the wizard of oz' it looks like the characters in the movie are singing the songs... it is called "dark side of the rainbow". its a stoner thing i hear, but i would like to try it just to watch.
