i noticed users with torn avatars. does that mean anything?

It's lightning - it's probably left over from when they changed their avatar around Halloween. They added a lot of great things to spice up your avatar for the holiday - costumes, scary backgrounds and the "torn" look, which is actually lightning.
Right now you can go and add some cool stuff for the upcoming holidays - you can tangle yourself up in christmas lights or wear a hanukkah t-shirt, add a holiday background, etc. Check out the avatar page to change your's for the season. Just remember to save your look to your favorites before you change anything - if you want to keep your old avatar to use again later. Then after you re-do your new one for the holiday, save that as a favorite as well.

What do you mean torn? Do you mean the ones with the lightning bolt in their back ground?

Oh the light bulb just went on above my head. I thought they were torn too. It's lighting though, thank you for asking.

lolololol, it took me forever to figure it out. thats lightning, but in still pictures it appears as a tare.
