I actually got too lazy to use my toner, but it is actually a very important part of your beauty routine. The cleanser opens the pores to clean all the gunk out, and the toner then cleans and closes the pores. If you don't use toner, your pores are open for all the dirt to get into!
So, look for a toner that is mild enough for your skin. The clinique range is very nice, or I actually like Environ. The Environ has vitamins in and an ingredient that reduces wrinkles. (you are never too young to work on this!)

Nothing minimizes pores. It's hereditary. Don't buy into it. Facial toners dry out the skin. Just exfoliate twice a week. Make sure to moisturize. When you wash your face, use a washcloth. If your skin's too dry, your skin flakes and that causes blemishes. Since I stopped being so harsh to my skin and started moisturizing, I've seen a huge improvent. I also have big pores.

Toners have a mild (and short-lived) tightening effect on the skin. They are also great skin refreshers.
Toner with a significant proportion of alcohol are described as astringents and should only be used on oily skins bc of their drying action. They also have valuable antiseptic properties.
Rosewater makes a freshening and fragrant tonic for dry and sensitive skin types.
One of the best natural toners, however, is cold water. This can be splashed lightly onto your face even your eyes and directed at other parts of your body using a shower head, to bring fresh blood to the surface.

The 3-step routine. Cleanse, tone and moisturize. Toner helps in removing any last traces of dirt, debrises or makeup that the cleanser did not remove. It also helps to tone up the skin, close pores temporarily and prepares your skin for moisturizer effect.
If you find that the current toner is too harsh, try one which is alcohol-free like neutrogena maybe. Needless to say, do choose one that is for your skin-type.

I use to work with skincare products, and the purpose of toner is to sluff off dead and flaky skin. If you find that the toner you used was too harsh, get a milder one. It does actually serve a purpose.

the truth about toners is that its a marketing gimmick... it has absolutely no benefits other than irritating your skin. unfortunately this probably isn't the answer that people want to hear but its the truth..
