But there is a way to put both computers on line with 1 modem with a 5 port 10/100 network hub and cable to each computer and the modem plugs in the hub
the computers plug in the hub now both computers used the same modem and with 1 provider. and can be at the same time or not.

No reason why not, but to have them both on line at the same time you need two separate phone lines if you are using dial-up.

That's the way we operated at my house until we got satellite broadband. Now one satellite modem and a wireless router serve multiple computers.

You can also use internet connection sharing through a crossover cable or a home network, but that can be with one modem.

Dial-up modems? If they use the same phone line, yes, but not at the same time. Its not physically possible to have two modems talking to someone else on the same phone line at once. DSL? Technically, yes, because you can put a splitter on the line and use different frequency ranges, however most DSL implementations split the frequency range one time, and use the lower range for voice communication and the higher range for DSL.

So basically the answer is no unless each modem has its own line.

Sure you can if you have 2 seperate internet service providers! It would be a foolish thing to do tho if you have broadband and if you have dialup you would need a second phone line!
