It is the right move, but at the wrong time. You don't ever move your closer to the rotation until you have a closer to take his place!!!!!!!!!
Epstein is stubborn and wants his boy Hansen to close, but Hansen has shown nothing yet.
I think Epstein has a "man-crush" on Hansen!

They are pulling a Lowe, but unlike Lowe as far as I know Papelbon has no urgent desire to start. It is a huge mistake on the Redsox's part. Finding a top notch closer is nearly impossible. Few teams have one. Many teams have solid starters. So unless Papelbon turns into a Cy Young winner it is a HUGE mistake. Worse the cantidates to replace him as closer are mostly jokes that will lose lots of games for the Redsox.
This offseason has been a disaster for the Sox so far. JD Drew ROFL. Worse they paid him a HUGE sum of money. If he paid me I wouldn't let him play on a team I owned or managed. It goes downhill from there. The Sox are determined to have a losing season this year if they have to spend every penny they have to do it.

i was pretty sure the bosox were using papelbon outta the bullpen to get him geared up for joining the regular starting rotation. think the sox handled it well and the time is right. boston is as deep pitching-wise as any team these days so they'll have a quality closer whether we've heard of him or not yet. and if the sh!thouse goes up in flames and the plan backfires they can throw papelbon back into a temporary relief role.
good thing for them they didn't get gagne to be the designated closer. dead arm.
go sox baby

It is absolutely the right move. Simply put, Papelbon has too much talent to keep in the bullpen. A good starter is worth far more to a team than a good closer. Papelbon has the talent to start and it would only be wasted if he is kept in a closer role.

Well the niave people will say no, because they have no closer, and he was so good at it.
They are moving him into the rotation because of his shoulder. Pitching 3-4 days a week for 6 months is not good for his shoulder. Its the reason why he was closed down injured for September 2006.
If he is the closer, he will get injured, again and again, and then he isn't the closer, hes a guy on the DL.
Moving him to the rotation (he was always projected to be a starter, and just fell into the closing role) will be better, because it gives him a consistent schedule to work off, pitch rest rest pitch etc etc.
Maybe, maybe he might spend some time there because of their needs towards the postseason, but its a risk.

The naive people probably at least know how to spell the word, however. A regular schedule could be good for Papelbon's shoulder, though. And if he does pitch well, a good starter is worth more than a good reliever.

OMG HECK NO!! what are they thinking.. they dont need to do that what so ever.. he's much better fitted for closing.. he will end up gettin hammered if he becomes a starter.. whats wrong with the sox.. they jus signed that dude from japan for millions and they may still get clemens who knows..

Nope, they have enough starters and Papelbon was one of the best closers in the majors.

it's alright... like that guy CHANG said, JD DREW will be the closer for the red sox... as a matter of fact, have him play every position... CHANG said he was good in the national league, he should be good in the american league...
