He got about 3million a year in japan. that is the figure that has been widely reported.

It is a lot more money, but he was hardly poor before that.

He got about $3 million a year, and it sounds like he'll get a $52 million, 6 year contract with the Red Sox. He has been a millionaire for a while, becuase he also had endorsements from Japanese companies.

It's a lot of money for him. Japanese ballplayers are well paid, but the taxman takes a very large chunk. As well, in Japan the players can't accept their own endorsements etc.-their image belongs to their team. Even in the off-season a Japanese pro baseball team tells their players what to do with their time. He is going from being financially comfortable to filthy rich.
