A silk or live plant would be a bright spot in his room. Maybe a cut flower in a vase, once a week. Make a commitment to bring him a flower in a vase once a week for a year. You will then establish a re pore with him and possible a relationship on this weekly delivery!! Now that is reaching out and not just "gifting" at the holiday.....

Maybe get him things like a deck of cards, some board games, stuff that would cause him to be more social. Sometimes people feel like their family has abandoned them by putting them in a nursing home so if you gave him the gifts and then the family walked in to play with him he would feel loved and have fun! it is perfect!

Buy him a pocket watch. Every once in awhile he'll check the time and remember that someone thought to buy him a gift.

Look around at suitable shops. I had to buy a present for the elderly at my Church. I bought a beautifully presented gift with liquid hand wash, hand lotion & a soap dish. For a gentlemen - maybe a shaving set?! It also depends on how much can you spent on him.

Take him his favorite meal with a good dessert. I take ribs, beans and slaw to a resident and pick up a pie at Perkins. Some people would like you to eat some with them. Best of luck to you!!

Try and find out what good books are from back then, you know ask other older people or even at the book store to see if they can help you. Something of nostalgic like.

first off i think it's great that you're doing this for him. you said that he doesn't talk and that you want to get to know him better so what about some kind of board game. board games always get people talking.
