Hello,
I had LASIK to correct my nearsightedness and astigmatism. To answer your questions, yes it works and no it doesn't hurt. LASIK is the best thing I have ever done in my life, I am not handicapped by eyeglasses/contact lenses anymore.
During the procedure, your eyes are numbed with drops so you cannot feel a thing. After the drops wear off (hours after the procedure is complete and you are safe at home), there will be some scratchiness/irritation. This can be avoided if you just go to bed as soon as you get home. Then you will sleep through the drops wearing off. The post-procedure scratchiness is the only discomfort you should encounter.
My vision is now 20/10 - better than 20/20.
I hope you are able to get the procedure, it will change your life. Just find a well-qualified surgeon, do some research and at least go in for a consult. The surgeon can answer all of your questions to your satisfaction.
Good luck to you and I wish you perfect vision in 2007!

I had lasEK and it did not hurt at all. No pain ever during or following the operation. People who have had lasik have told me that doesn't hurt either (and is much quicker than lasek to set up, a few seconds instead of a few minutes). Both operations take under 60 seconds. I think I was given Valium, Percocet, an eye-drop med, and an eye-drop antibiotic after (could be wrong it was a long time ago). But I am very happy with it!!! no glasses anymore =D.
From what i've heard and remember, lasik is when they peel back a flap of the eye and do the laser surgery, lasek is where they scrape off the top layer and do the surgery (it regrows), and prk is the last one, i forget how they do that one but they are all similar in results.
And yea it works I have between 20/20 and 20/25 vision now (had slightly better than 20/20 with glasses before the operation, though). some people see better after (than before even with their glasses), some see a bit worse, and very rarely the operation doesn't work well and they need to redo it. I had to wear sunglasses outdoors for about a month after the operation.
See your opthomologist. Good luck it's great =D.

LASIK is painless and works very well. The best thing to do is to go to a LASIK center and get an evaluation. They should be free of charge with no obligation for surgery. A thorough exam should be 1 1/2 - 2 hours long and your eyes may be dilated (unless the center has a fundus camera - takes picture of the eye, what the doctor would see if you were dilated). You should have a chance to meet with the surgeon and discuss your options and what you're a candidate for.
Make sure your surgeon has experience (# of procedures he/she has performed as well as years in practice), find out his/her success rate as well as the technologies offered in the center. Don't commit to one place after one visit, definitely do some comparison shopping - not bargain hunting though! Make sure you feel comfortable and you are offered the best for your eyes - you only get one set!
Good luck!

Done properly, lasik works wonderfully.
No, it doesn't hurt. I never even had to take one Tylenol or aspirin.

Yes, but U are given pain medication to keep it from hurting. The medication also keeps U drowsy and asleep for several days afterwards during the healing process.
