Fear is right. If there is no fear in society then there would be chaos. In Lord of the Flies, there are the 2 groups. They are trying to maintain group within the community on the island. This analogous to a civilized society. If pple just went went around hurting others (like Piggy gets hurt), then pple would do it all the time. On the Island, the boys become violent and scary(if memory serves, its been a long time since i read it), but the equivalent in our society is going to prison, or getting your rights taken away from you. Since there was no civilized society on the island, they used what they had to..they didn't have a jail...but they had savagery, or the fear of it, to help control those within the group. PS. Paraphrase this...don't take it word for word, luvy.

That's a really interesting question. And I think it relates to the title of the book. The title is the Devil or Satan (or Beelzebub, the lord of the flies). By permitting and encouraging savagery, he unleashes the instinctual life of eating and following the group, and listening to the loudest most authoritative voice. And fighting, and WINNING. If man is nothing but another animal, then he had
best live an instinctual life, like the others. If he is not an animal
at all, but something else entirely, he had better........ponder.

the savagery generated Fear in the troops. Its sort of looking at two guys who want to fight you. One is a big, strapping, healthy, sane guy. The other is average but whacked out of his gourd. Real unpredictable. Who yu gonna fight? Most would go the sane route. Jack was CRAZY.

he basically preys off of their basic instincts; people often lose ground and sway in times of fear; so you can just take advantage of them because they are scared for their lives.
