We lived in L.A. and Walnut Creek, Ca. I can say that Texas is AMAZING for cost of living! We moved to Flower Mound (Money magazine named one of the top 5 best places to live in US). It is very family friendly. If you are looking for something closer to Dallas proper, then look at "Hackberry Creek" in Las Colinas, Plano, Frisco, Lake Highland, Richardson, White Rock Lake...there are just so many wonderful, family oriented places to live here. It will really depend on where you work though...traffic can be bad but nothing like 405 or 110 traffic!! Hope this helps! Good luck!

I suggest the Hill Country Region. It's around the Austin/San Antonio area. You can move into suburban neighborhoods close to these cities, or you can move away from these cities (within an hour) live "in the country" and still be close to all the things a city offers without any of the downsides. It's also a great place if you're looking for a place with the kids in mind. Many communites around Boerne (a city slightly NE of San Antonio) and other areas require that houses be built on at least 2,3, sometimes 4 or 5 acres, so you'd be guaranteed to have a tremendous amount of yard space. The cost of living is also wonderful. Lots of companies are finding out how great the SA area is and are moving their headquarters to San Antonio, so it's pretty easy to find a job there.
hope that helps and get to Texas as soon as you can, It's great here!

You are from a very big city and if you enjoy what the city offers Texas has 5 large cities to choose from: Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas and Ft. Worth . Each of these cities have numerous suburbs. Texas has many small communities. It all depends on what you are looking for. Some things you will like about Texas are our much lower housing costs and we have no state income tax. The people are great and very friendly. Great schools with many recreational programs can be found in most areas of the state. Welcome to our great state.

HELLO AUSTIN!! I plan to move to Redondo Beach area next summer, from Texas, and have lived in Dallas and Austin for 25 years. It's like night and day. If you're looking for a more open-minded accepting, more health conscious outdoorsy environmentally friendly and parks and nature preserves and springs and waterfalls everywhere, and more hometown feel (for a big city), Austin is the place, west Austin is like the santa monica rec area placed on a few lakes, and lot's of barbeque joints and taco shops throughout. Dallas is much less real and riddled with concrete with few nature preserve areas at all, Marfa Texas is a very small town, and recently rated one of the best small towns to live in in the US. It's very family oriented and as artsy as can be, with the famed "Marfa Lights" to boot. Austin or Marfa, depending on big or small town. There are a few towns an hour west of Austin that are all near lakes, or on them, and not too expensive, near Lake Buchanan is a great spot.

Well, anywhere is better than L.A. but Texas isn't by much. It depends on what you do for a living, what you can afford, how far you're willing to commute, what activities you like to partake in, etc.
Texas has a little of everything, and there are some wonderful areas, but it's declining very, very fast. We're being overrun by illegal aliens, the state and local governments are highly corrupt, the overall politics are outrageous, and the economy here is very "boom/bust."
Think hard and do a LOT of research before coming to Texas. I've been here 12.5 years and can't WAIT to get out. If you like the southern attitudes and climates, but don't want the BS, you might want to consider New Mexico, Oklahoma, or Arkansas.

Tyler, Longview, Athens . . . many nice little East Texas towns big enough to have shopping and a movie theater. Also Sherman and Dennison in North Texas. Sorry not so familiar with south Texas. How will you earn a living?

well i moved to Texas from NY and i have lived in rural and cities from Dallas to the Rio grandee valley and Houston. the place i think is best is where i live now, Katy or more west on i 10. we have 40+ miles of bike and hike trails numerous parks and its a suburb of a big city. hey as far as crime its everywhere. but this Katy is so family oriented, probably in the top 10 as far as schooling and everybody knows Texas has more opportunity's than most states.

North fort worth is a perfect place for kids. I live in Southlake, which is about 10 min south of DFW airport, and its perfect. 10 out of the 11 schools in town are rated exemplary, and if you want a close knit town with loads of school spirit you got it. Our football team is nationally recognized, drawing the whole community together. Its low crime rate and suburban amenities make it a perfect place to live. at least look into it, you wont regret it. Plus, moving from California, you get more bang for your buck here so you will be amazed at what you can buy here. It was named Dallas magazine's community of the year

Small towns would be best. You can't eliminate gangs and other social parasites. They are everywhere, even small towns, but they're not as violent in small towns in most cases. Pick a small town thats about 30 to 45 minutes from a big city, that way you have the stores near by.
