They tend to be really skinny. I wonder if some of them feel pressured to be skinny, and go on diets in order to fit the image? I never hear about rock musicians going on diets though, so it is kind of a mystery.

They either have liquid diets or no desire to eat. When you're a young musician out on your own, you have a choice: Do I eat food or do I drink beer? Why eat food when you could just as easily drink a six-pack of Guinness? It's a meal that gets you wasted.
Or they do drugs. You have no desire to eat on speed or cocaine, and on heroin or painkillers, food will kill the buzz and you'll be constipated anyway. Don't even attempt to eat anything on psychedelic drugs like acid or mushrooms -- you'll puke that **** up.
Then some are vegans, raw-foodists or macrobiotic dieters. Not so much because they want to look slim, but because they buy into crazy diet fads that are hip at the time.

I guess it kinda depends on whether the band is independant or commercial. You'll notice most really hardworking rock musicians in underground or indie bands are either too skinny, or a little too plump for their own good. They usually don't bother all that much about the image they portray cos all they have to give for the gig goers are their music and playing skills. Commercial bands are always in the spotlight, always under scrutiny in the eyes of the public. They're selling their music to 'consumers', so to speak. Attractive packaging helps grab attention and interest.

They move so much, and use alcohol as a substitute for meals.
Some of the use drugs and helps them stay slim too. Michael Jackson was on a drugdiet actually, some time ago, and changed to look like a skeletor.
