IT DEPENDS ON THEIR RELIGION BEING LEGALISTIC OR GRACE-BASED...
1. Legalistic Based Religion - ANY religion that declares you MUST follow rules to live a good life, teaches you to look down on those who are not of your religion, thinks that anyone NOT of your religion is going somewhere other than heaven, preaches forgiveness but HAS NONE for others, and generally excludes anyone who does not FIT IN.
2. Grace Based Religion - ANY religion that declares there are no rules to living a good life EXCEPT THAT YOU BE KIND, that teaches you to accept those who are not of your religion, that teaches you how to help others gain that forgiveness in the afterlife, has forgiveness FOR ALL PEOPLE, and accepts ANYONE - UNCONDITIONALLY.
Now on this basis, I tend to believe that people of a legalistic religion tend to be less happy than those who are non-religious.
And those people of a grace-based religion tend to be more happy than those who are non-religious, although that can once again depend on the religion being applied.
I know many people who are deleriously happy and have no religion whatsoever. But that's ok with me, my religion is open to all walks of life - if you want to be saved,
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS ASK - AND CHOOSE TO DO GOOD.

I find that the religious people are generally much happier than the non-religious

It depends...some are more judgemental...holier than thou types...some are unhappy acting....and there are some especially the ones that go to a non traditional church, the kind that has christian rock music, that are totally care free happy types....
