In May 1827, Dickens began work in the office of Ellis and Blackmore as a law clerk, a junior office position with potential to become a lawyer, a profession for which he later showed his dislike in his many literary works. He later became a court stenographer at the age of 17.

At the age of 12, Charles Dickens worked in a London factory pasting labels on bottles of shoe polish. He held the job only a short time, but the misery of that experience left scars on his memory. He never spoke of it to his wife or children in later years.

He had to work because John Dickens, Charles father, worked as a clerk for the navy. He spent time in prison for debt and when he was free, he lacked money to support his family adequately.
