find out which program they are using there are several different ones then go to that website and download the program and follow the directions, its easy.

First to start with IM (instant Messenger) is an application where you can send instant messages (as the name suggests) to your friends over the net.
this is available by many different vendors u may say, like yahoo, AOL, windows live etc.. So first you need to know what are your friends using i.e. having a account with. Once you have the information, either go to the vendors site (ex: for yahoo it is messenger.yahoo.com). If you do not know the site just enter the vendor's name and the text "messenger" at search.yahoo.com or google.com and you should be able to get the site address.
Then go to the site and download the latest IM application available and install it on you machine. The rest of the steps are guided by the installation itself and you should not have any problem in using it.
Note that to use these applications you need an account with the vendor. Some IMs like yahoo msngr will ask the same after installing and then lead you to create account page. Once done you can easily add your friends id to your friends list and send instant messages to them..

First you have to know what they are using (MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, ICQ, etc.) before you can register for an account and download the proper software. If several of your friends use different software, you may want to try using Trillian (or similar software) which can consolidate a number of IMs for you, instead of you needing to run several different IM programs at once. You would still have to register for accounts separately though.

What you have to do is Download the latest version of Yahoo Messenger. Then you can invite your friends to be on your list. If you know their Yahoo ID you can Add them yourself!!
