The cat will win everytime! The tree comes in second...and you (we) unfortunately come in last as we are left to clean up the mess and if you are truly unfortunate (as I have been way too many times) you end up stepping on the fallen ornaments in bare feet. The first year we had a tree we were finding the mini ornaments all over the house 6 months later. Kitties had a ball that year!
I am including the website for a longitudinal case study that helps to prove my point! http://www.fluffytails.ca/christmas.asp

I think it's a fair fight... The cat is wiley, cunning and determined - they also have a focus bordering on psychotic when it comes to destroying something they have in thier sights.
That said, the Christmas tree posseses it's own natural defenses - pine needles being the first and most obvious of these. They smell so enticing but have the advantage of being hard as honed steel and poking kitty in his or her exposed regions. The second is the all too enticing leads for the Christmas lights... rubbery and fun to chew but impregnated with free flowing electricity. This is indeed how the Christmas tree entices and stuns it's favourite of foods - namely small and curious household pets.

Well! Once again this year my cats are winning. I have two cats that like to play chase around my tree and climb up the middle.
I have picked up 5 broken bulbs and replaced at lot of tinsel so far. They have knocked down at lot more bulbs, but the rest have not broken. I think they like to see if they can get my decorations that are bird shaped.

I guess it depends on how feisty the cat is and on how prickly the tree is. I would have to go with neither because the cat would knowc the tree down and most likely it would fall on the cat.
