What is the black stuff that football players put under their eyes and what purpose does it have?

I'm assuming American football as well, I think it has something to do with not getting as much glare from the sun in youe eyes, but I have seen players with it at night games. It might be the war paint idea...

I assume you're referring to American football coz soccer players don't do that. And it's war paint. They just think it makes them look cool. No real purpose. Maybe it makes them feel like a warrior.
