After reading all of the answers I will give you mine as quick and easy to understand.
1. If you dont have a OL for a motorcycle DONT even think about getting on one, and if you do dont ride it (its not worth the headache if you wreck it).
2. The dealership (HD or what ever)SHOULD NOT let you on a bike with out a OL because of insurance reasons.
3. If you plan on getting a bike be sure to take the riders awareness class that is offered either through a DMV or local school.
4. And yes the key does come out on SOME models of Harleys.

On Harley-Davidson bikes, the key is used to lock/unlock the steering head or to lock/unlock the ignition switch. So yes, once unlocked you put the key in your pocket.
As far as starting...lol...assuming the the ole girl is cold, pull out the choke located near the fuel petcock. Turn on the ignition switch, one turn clockwise should doit, and dont make the noob mistake of honking the horn using the thumb switch on the left side of the handlebars..lol. Start button will be on the right hand control.
Another big difference with HD is the blinkers switch is not the two way flip switch you may be use to. There is a button on the left bar side for left blinkers and one on the right side for right blinker. Just grab the bars and stick your thumbs out, you'll see the blinker switches then.
Let er warm up for at least 3 minutes. Adjust the choke as needed. If you smell fuel, push the choke in. She's runnin a bit rich, hehe.
If you are planning on buying a HD then Congrats and have fun!

You won't look like an ass for asking about starting procedure on a specific model.

You will look like an ass if you have never ridden a motorcycle before, and your first experience is on a large powerful motorcycle, on public roads - and you crash.

If you've never ridden before, you really need to take the rider safety course before you test ride any bikes. Trust me, you'll be very happy you did!

You already look like as *** asking that question. Hang a round a place with a lot of bikes and watch them. Maybe you should take a training course before you even take a test ride. Matter of fact, don't you need a cycle license to ride one?
