I remember a brilliant cover of the Beatles song Eleanor Rigby but i can not remember the name of the band. I know it's been covered a stack of times, but has anyone got a suggestion on who it might be?

In the early 70's, Australian band Zoot did a hard rock version of Elanor Rigby. Zoot consisted of (then) teenagers Rick Springfield, Darryl Cotton (remember Cotton, Lloyd & Christian?), Beeb Birtles (from Little River Band) and a drummer, whose name unfortunately escapes me. The guys were so young at the time, their parents had to sign their recording contracts!

According to wikipedia:

Numerous artists have covered "Eleanor Rigby" in a variety of styles, at least 61 released on albums by one count:

* Aretha Franklin, on the album This Girl's In Love With You and as a single, released one of the more notable covers, switching the song to first person and replacing the string quartet with a driving soul backing, complete with a chorus.
* Ray Charles also released a famous cover version as a single and on the album A Portrait of Ray. This soul cover one steers closer to the original, retaining a string section, but adds a driving drum part and a more subdued chorus.
* Joan Baez's 1967 version was sung to classical orchestration.
* The band Panic! At The Disco covered the song during their American Nothing Rhymes with Circus tour.
* The Fray (band) covered the song during their Stripped Music Sessions [1].
* It was sampled by Talib Kweli for his song "Lonely People".
* Sinéad O'Connor used the chorus of "Eleanor Rigby" for a song called "Famine" from the 1995 album "Universal Mother".
* Other notable artists who have covered "Eleanor Rigby" include Tony Bennett,Bobbie Gentry, Diana Ross & the Supremes, Kansas , The Temptations, John Denver, The Four Tops, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Thrice, Godhead, Violet Burning, Zoot, The Fray, Pain, Louis XIV,Vanilla Fudge, Dee Snider with Eddie Ojeda, and Boston Pops.

I'll bet the one you're thinking of is listed among these covers.

Air Supply. Man, those dudes rock so hard, they can melt speaker wire.

J/K...you may be referring to the version by Thrice, which appeared on an obscure benefit album for an OC hospital years ago. Only one that comes to mind.
