It is all part of the marketing of the new album. They send a single from the new CD to the radio etc and get them to play it to get a buzz going for the new CD.

Typically they are advance copies sent out for music reviews and to radio stations. Stores will receive copies about a week beore the their release. Some are ripped off by employees during the CD manufacturing process up to two months before the "official" release date.

There is a raprock band in my home country, whose clone copy of their upcoming album was stolen. Member of the band's car got broken into during the wee hours of the day. Sometimes it's all for publicity, gimmick of marketing strategies, and sometimes it's just plain bad luck.

Tracks are let out on purpose to create hype for the album, or bootlegged by recording studio employees.

The band wants more publicity and they leak it or have their managers leak it. It's all about creating hype for the band.
