The Muslim calendar is entirely lunar. Every month begins with the sighting of the new moon. But the moon is not synchronized to the sun. A lunar month is about 29 1/2 days long, and that number does not divide evenly into 365. So every Muslim year begins about 11 days early every solar year. Muharram (Muslim New Year) moves slowly backwards through the Western Calendar and so do all the other Muslim holydays.
