12.5 meters
it is a ratio
1m (x)=.4m
x=.4/1
x=.4
tree(.4)=5m
tree=5m/.4
tree=12.5 m

Watch the movie "Twins" starring Danny Devito and Arnold Swatanigga...
Think Triangles ...
A squared + B squared = square root of C square
5 square + (0.4 x 5) square = square root (A square +B square)
Assuming both tree and meter stick measure are straight you can multiply the meter stick by 5 to match the height of the tree while allowing the correct answer to still be computed.

As the 0.4m shadow goes to one meter stick so the five meter shadow will go to X meters!
So: 0.4/1 = 5/X
and X = (5x1)/0.4 = 12.5 m

0.4 /1 = 5/x , where x is the height of the tree
cross-multiply to get:
0.4x = 5
x = 5/0.4
x=12.5
Therefore the tree is 12.5 m.

Let ym be the tree's tall.
1/0.4=y/5
1/0.4x0.4=y/5x0.4
1=0.4y/5
1x5=0.4y/5x5
5=0.4y
5/0.4=0.4y/0.4
y=12.5
The tree is 12.5m.
