It's normal for girls to have irregular periods at your age. I know that I had trouble with my period all throughout high school. At one point I became very thin from an eating disorder as well as sports, and both of those things can cause your period to not come. When I was 18, I was put on birth control and suddenly my periods were completely predictable. Side effects I experienced were weight gain, water weight retention, bigger boobs (!!) but also lighter periods, less PMS, and less cramps, which was very nice. If you start using tampons, don't go with the cheaper off-brands - make sure you get ones with an easy applicator, like Tampax Pearl. If you get those cheap cardboard types you will regret it because sometimes they hurt to insert. I'm sure you will be fine - your body is probably still adjusting! Good luck!

You may have a cyst that produces hormones that stop your period. If you're sexually active then there are other possibilities. Eating disorders also can stop your period.
Sometimes, eating disorders and physical activity can contribute to this. Birth control has come a long way but some women experience heart problems and migraines and such. Most women are fine using BCP but if at all possible I always suggest other methods than hormonal treatments whenever possible. For some women - like myself - I got migraines and my hormones were messed up for a long time using BCP. They can alter the dose but doctors don't always know the right dose and for alot of women I think that they are better off without it if at all possible.
Tampons are easy and they show you how to use one right on instructions inside the box. Get the gentle kind that will make things easier there's like a gazillion choices on those - I recommend branded ones and not generic that will be slim and have a plastic applicator.

Taking birth control will help to regulate your period so that you know when and how long it is. Your activity could be the cause to your period not coming. Don't worry, it'll be back. i pelvic exam is when the doctor has you lay on table, put feet in stirrups and he will insert finger and feel around inside you - your uterus, you tubes, your ovaries, your cervix, your birth canal - You should talk to the Doctor and find out if he thinks you are to young to use tampons, I don't think they recommend them that young due to risk of toxin shock syndrome. Check with your Doctor. Good luck!
FYI - just becasue you are a minor, I don't think your parents can force you to take pills, etc.

The birth control pill is great for regulating periods, it also makes it so your periods aren't so heavy.
I don't get a period on my own and have been on the pill for years.
There are side effects but they are different for everyone and you may not experience any at all. The only way to find out is trial and error. If you don't like a specific type of pill the doctor describes, ask to switch to another brand.
If I may make a suggestion, Ortho Trycycline Lo has worked the best for me.
Good luck!

I took birth control pills once and they will regulate your period.
There are no known side affects but ask your doctor which kind is best for you. If you are using a tampon put one leg on the toilet seat and gently insert into vagina, make sure string hangs out so you can change it llater or it does not get stuck. Very bad!!
I heard though that tampons are dangerous they could cause cervical cancer. I suggest you only wear onje for sports and wear a pad the rest of the time.

You are still young. Your body will do things in it's own time, if that makes sense. In other words, your body may have not needed to shed anything from your female organs. Don't worry too much, the doctors know what they are doing and every woman/young lady has to see the doctor when they reach this time in their life. As far as birth control, that is something that your mom, your doctor and you have to discuss. Try not to worry, everything will be just fine.

If you take a low dose of birth-control, your periods will be regulated so you know exactly what days you'll have it. Some of the side effects are slight weight gain, headaches, and spotting. If you're on a low dose though the side effects shouldn't be serious at all.

my 18 year old daughter has had the same problem since she was 13. she has been to all kinds of doctors and had every kind of test done possible. They have never found the cause for her problem. the doctors finally decided it was a normal thing for her. However it's a good idea for you to seek as much medical advise as possible.

they are probably right about it being due to sports, but are doing a pelvic exam as a precaution. if you are not sexually active i would not worry about the pill. it will not hurt you not to have a period.
