Also, how can you tell if a watersnail is dead or alive? Sorry about these questions, but my roommate's kid just got a new tank and they have no idea what they're doing.

room temp water is good and you cant realy tell if its alive till its starts moving

Most fresh water snails are tropical. The will thrive in water kept above 68 degree's. As for telling if there alive or dead. Watch them if you see there shell roll over on it's side alot good sign that it is dead. Don't throw it out if it is floating because most snails will can float there shells why they do this I have no idea. I have three huge apple snails and I will notice that they sometimes float to the surface and hang out there for a little while then float back down and start eating again.
