Basically marijuana was outlawed for two reasons. One was racial prejudice against Mexicans who used it. Another was the fear that heroin addiction would lead to the use of marijuana -- exactly the opposite of the modern gateway myth.

Alcohol is, and always has been, a real problem in society. There were major campaigns to outlaw alcohol in the early part of the 20th century because it really was a problem. On the other hand, there were no major campaigns to outlaw the other drugs simply because they weren't perceived to be a major problems. The drug laws relating to marijuana, heroin, cocaine, and similar drugs were largely the result of a small group of kooks (yes, "kooks" -- read the history and you will see what I mean).

Homicides soared, corrupt cops went to prison literally by the trainload and -- worst of all - it caused the biggest teen drinking epidemic the US has ever seen.
